In the center of the newly-restored, former warehouse building at 535 South White Street in Wake Forest’s growing downtown, newlyweds Thomas and Stephanie McGeough have brought a unique fitness experience to the community. The couple, who recently opened Pure Barre Wake Forest fitness studio, are passionate about sharing this full-body workout with the area’s residents, offering a supportive environment for individuals at every fitness level.
Stephanie, whose background in competitive gymnastics and cheerleading led her to discover Pure Barre, recalls her introduction to the workout. “After I graduated from college, I was looking for something to do to stay active. I stumbled across Pure Barre at an alumni event in Wilmington, NC. I became a member the same day, and it has been a huge part of my life ever since,” she says. Though Pure Barre is inspired by ballet, pilates, and yoga, she emphasizes that no dance background is necessary to enjoy its benefits. “It’s a common misconception that you need to have a dance background.”
The studio offers four class formats designed to improve strength, flexibility, and balance. “Pure Barre is a low impact, high intensity, full-body workout that uses small, precise movements to target and tone your muscles,” Stephanie explains.
The decision to open a Pure Barre studio in Wake Forest came after the couple explored the town’s vibrant atmosphere. “Upon visiting Wake Forest’s charming downtown, we immediately knew it was the perfect community for us to build our Pure Barre Studio,” says Stephanie. The local response has been nearly instant and overwhelmingly positive. “Some of our members that we have only known for a few months feel like lifelong friends,” says Thomas. The support extended beyond the business, with members congratulating the couple on their recent nuptials, adding a personal touch to their connection with the community.
Building a sense of community is central to the McGeoughs’ business philosophy. The couple is eager to collaborate with local organizations and give back, aligning with Pure Barre’s national initiatives. While still in the early stages of these efforts, they are committed to supporting causes that benefit the area. “We’ve spoken to a few local organizations about how Pure Barre can help in the future,” says Thomas.
The McGeoughs have also received tremendous support from neighboring businesses. “Several businesses participated in our Grand Opening event by donating raffle prizes and actively taking part,” says Thomas. This sense of community extends beyond their studio doors, reinforcing the value of local partnerships and strengthening the business landscape in Wake Forest.
Pure Barre Wake Forest’s arrival contributes to the growth and rejuvenation of the downtown area, particularly the south end, which is seeing a rapid revitalization. “We are all growing together,” Stephanie says, excited to support the town’s future.
As new fitness options emerge, the couple keeps Pure Barre competitive by emphasizing the sense of community within their studio. “We aren’t just a fitness studio; we are invested in our members' well-being,” Thomas explains. “We want Pure Barre Wake Forest to be a place where you can come to feel supported, and fitness is just one piece of the puzzle.”
Looking ahead, the McGeoughs are excited about Wake Forest’s responsible growth trajectory. “We think Pure Barre is for everyone, and more people is certainly good for our business,” says Thomas. He encourages other entrepreneurs to “immerse yourself in the community,” pointing to the incredible support they’ve received from fellow business owners.
“Pure Barre Wake Forest is a fantastic example of how small businesses are both investing in and contributing to the dynamic growth of our downtown,” says Jason Cannon, President of the Wake Forest Business and Industry Partnership (WFBIP). “By offering their unique fitness experience and fostering community connections, Thomas and Stephanie are not only enriching the local wellness scene but also playing a key role in the ongoing economic development of Wake Forest. We are honored to support their journey as part of our vibrant business community.”
For those curious about Pure Barre, the studio offers a welcoming invitation: your first class is free. Stephanie encourages anyone considering a new workout routine to visit, adding, “You don't need dance experience and can come in at any fitness level and get a great workout.”
With their dedication to both fitness and fostering strong community ties, the McGeoughs are positioning their business to make a lasting impact on Wake Forest.
